The fascinating hand-crafted Shankla jewel

The fascinating hand-crafted Shankla jewel

The fascinating hand-crafted Shankla jewel… handmade jewelery… The artisanal process used to produce a shankla has something magical about it, and our customers love hearing about this: each shankla is created by hand… Its semi-precious stones come from exotic places and are rigorously selected from all over the world. The result is a shankla unique to its wearer, as no two shanklas are the same. Each shankla is one-off and special.

The natural stones, selected from the very best materials come from hand-picked locations in the South Seas, South Africa and Australia, Afghanistan, Peru and Brazil… We have conducted exhaustive studies to ensure that each type of semi-precious stone is of the best natural material and comes from the finest source possible, having searched for and selected them from all over the world…

This is how we make sure that Mother Nature speaks through each shankla, through each natural stone that formed gradually over the centuries

Of course our customers love hearing how shanklas are produced, and they often ask us about it. Today we’ve decided to share it on our blog: we want to tell you about the whole process that a shankla goes through before arriving at our shop as we see it 😉

  • Journey of semi-precious stones to thelapidaries

Semi-precious stones arrive at the lapidary in their natural state. From their natural points of origin, they are sent to the best lapidaries in Spain.

A complex procedure is followed in the lapidaries to cut the stones, work them and give them shape. Factors such as the size and shape of the base have to be taken into account, along with the thickness, which decreases almost imperceptibly but brings smoothness to the design… Each piece has to be worked individually by hand to achieve this.

The pieces are then drilled in three places with pinpoint accuracy (to allow the wishbone to be assembled) and are polished.

  • Engraving of Shankla by Paves

The natural stone bases arrive at the engraving section. Laser is used to engrave the Shankla on the rear of the stone.

  • The gold piece: wishbone, the lucky bone

The detail of the gold piece set into the stone, in the shape of a “Wishbone”, brings to mind the symbol of universal luck, together with the foot shape (don’t forget that it’s the right foot, to make sure your day gets off to a good start).

The 18k gold piece set in to the shankla is a wishbone (a fork-shaped bone found in poultry, created when the clavicles fuse together).

A wax mould is used to create the wishbone shape. Once cast, the pieces are reworked individually by hand, abraded to smooth their surface before they are inlaid; they are first put through large polishing drums, before a second more delicate polishing process is carried out by hand..

  • Assembly

Assembly is the process of joining the base to the wishbone.

  • “Made in Spain” Process:

The entire shankla creation process is managed, controlled and coordinated from Pavés in Puerto Banus.

  • Origin of the stones:

Each natural Shankla stone has a range of unique characteristics and properties, depending on where it forms, its composition and the mine where it is found. Our Shanklas by Paves come from the best possible deposits, from locations as diverse as Australia, Peru, Afghanistan, the South Seas, Brazil and South Africa.

Specifically, the stones have the following origins:

CRISOPRASA (Sweet Pink and Apple Green): Australia

– LAPISLAZULI (Magic Blue): Afghanistan

MOTHER OF PEARL (White Love): South Seas

TIGER’S EYE (Lucky Brown): Brazil / South Africa

ONYX (Original and Black Power): Brazil

PINK OPAL (Sweet Pink): Peru

CORNELIAN (Red Passion): Australia
