May 1st – Spanish Mother’s Day

May 1st – Spanish Mother’s Day

The beginnings of this celebration date back to ancient Greece, honoring the figure of Rhea, mother of the most important Greek gods such as Poseidon, Zeus or Hades. Later it passed into Roman culture receiving the name of Hilaria Celebration where its festivities lasted 3 days and took place on March 15 in the temple of Cibeles, mother goddess of the Earth. With the arrival of Christianity, it was celebrated on December 8 in honor of the Virgin Mary, coinciding with the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Finally it was Ana Jarvis who in 1907, to commemorate the figure of her mother, promoted the celebration of “Mother’s Day”. Day by day this initiative was gaining followers until the worldwide acceptance of this celebration.

Although each country has been adapting the date to its own criteria, the essence is the same: the unconditional love of the mother figure, the basis of all civilization.
